The South West Coast Path, England's longest trail.

630 miles of rugged coastal walking ... one of the top ten great trails of the world

Time to get the pain of defeat out of my psyche Cool

At the end of the 1980's I was struck down with a neurological condition that would see me fall to my knees about six times a day as bout after bout of almost unendurable pain swept over me, sometimes for hours at a time.

It was suggested that I might like to take up walking so I did. Lands End to John 'o' Groats, three times, three years in succession, twice with my long suffering partner at my side.

The next year I decided to walk Englands longest, and arguably toughest, trail, the 630 miles of the South West Coast path. 100 miles from the end in overwhelming pain I had to quit.

Now, with Albert's help, I'm going to do it again. Not all at once, like last time, but section by section as time, and weather, allows. I will park Albert up, and using public transport get to a new start point and walk back .  This is my log ...

Technical Note ...   (doesn't every serious activity log need one?)....

Shoe laces supplied by biglaces.co.uk

Amazing selection, amazing service. How to make a dull shoe look interesting.

My "Day" sac is a Lowe Alpine 25l. Far too big really for a day sac but supremely comfortable so it got the job.

Three pairs of shoes.

Reebok trail-running shoe, Goretex lined. Lightweight, nimble, well worn, my comfort shoe.

Merrell Moab, Goretex. A more aggressive vibram soled shoe for the tough parts.

Also I will take along my running shoes, Brooks Adrenalin, for the flat level sections such as the Barnstaple ex-railway track.

Shoes rather than boots? I prefer the extra nimbleness and also to allow my ankles to flex. My weak point is my knees!
